On Friday 18 November Director General, Anthony Abrahams MCIArb, declared the result of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators’ Presidential Elections 2016, in London. Trustees and representatives from CIArb’s branches worldwide attended the biennial meeting of Congress, in line with the Institute’s Royal Charter & Bye-Laws.

The Presidential candidates were: Louise Barrington C.Arb (East Asia Region), Keith Blizzard C.Arb (West Midlands, UK), James Bridgeman C.Arb (Ireland), Whit Engle FCIArb (North America), Thomas Halket C.Arb (New York) and Michael Pye C.Arb (North West, UK).

The elections were conducted under a weighted Electoral College voting system as laid down by CIArb Regulations.

Following the vote, it was announced that James Bridgeman C.Arb, would become CIArb’s Deputy President for 2017 and CIArb’s President in 2018, whilst Thomas Halket C.Arb, would become CIArb’s Vice President in 2017 and lead as President in 2019.

James Bridgeman will take on the role as a member who has demonstrated a long commitment to the Institute, having given almost 25 years’ service for the committee of the Irish Branch serving as Honorary Secretary, Vice Chair, Chair and more recently as Trustee.

Thomas Halket C.Arb has also served the Institute in a number of positions, first as Chair of the former New York Chapter, then as Chair of the Technology Subcommittee, Deputy Chair of the Board of Management, Chair of the Practice and Standards Committee and most recently as Vice Chair and Chair Elect of the New York Branch. He is also a member of the Panels Management Group.

Commenting on this, CIArb’s Director General, Anthony Abrahams, said:

“I am delighted to announce that James Bridgeman C.Arb and Thomas Halket C.Arb have been elected Deputy President and Vice President for 2017 respectively. Mr Bridgeman will become CIArb President in 2018 and Mr Halket will lead as President in 2019. I congratulate them both on their new roles.”

James Bridgeman added:

“The strengths of the Chartered Institute lie in the diversity, wealth of knowledge, breadth of experience and professionalism of our membership and the high standards that have been achieved by our membership through a century of work. The membership is expanding and the Institute is achieving ever wider recognition. The President is in a unique position to encourage the building and maintenance of these strengths within our Institute and to communicate these strengths to business and commercial communities across the world. I am greatly honoured and delighted to be elected and look forward to serving as Deputy President in 2017 and President in 2018.”

Thomas Halket said:

“The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators is a leader, recognized worldwide, in scholarship, education and accreditation in alternative dispute resolution. Its membership includes many of the foremost arbitrators, adjudicators, mediators and academics from many countries.  It is both a distinct honor and a true pleasure for me to have been elected to be its 2019 President. I look forward to representing the Institute and bringing its message to ADR users and practitioners around the world.”

CIArb’s current President Datuk Professor Sundra Rajoo C.Arb, will conclude his presidential year on 31 December 2016 and will be succeeded by Professor Dr. Nayla Comair-Obeid C.Arb, from 01 January 2017.
